Getting back with your ex may seem like a good idea at the time, but according to science, it’s actually a happiness vacuum that will destroy all the joy in your life.
A study at Kansas State University looking at couples in cyclical relationships – you know, the people that continually break up and get back together – and found that while Hollywood portrays the relationships as romantic, the truth is that they are actually like relationship dementors, sucking the happiness out of people’s lives.
According to the report in Medical Xpress, couples in cyclical relationships are more likely to be impulsive about major decisions, like having kids, buying pets or moving in together. This generally results in worse communication and more decisions that adversely affect the relationship.
Of course, these kinds of studies aren’t hard and fast rules, and there are almost definitely some relationships that would be considered cyclical that have enjoyed plenty of happy days. But it’s worth noting that according to science, if you’re thinking of poking your ex on Facebook, you probably shouldn’t – you’ll end up happier in the long run.
