In what could be the biggest news of the week in Melbourne before the actual on-track action begins, Red Bull Racing has tonight announced a formal partnership with one of the world’s most iconic car brands – Aston Martin.
It’s a complex and multi-layered partnership. The Aston Martin logo will take pride of place on the side of the Red Bull Racing F1 car from this weekend at Albert Park, the two companies will work together in an Innovation partnership, while perhaps most exciting is the commitment to build a road-going “hypercar”.
Codenamed “Project AM-RB 001” the hypercar will be a blend of F1 technology and Aston Martin design, which Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer described as having F1 like lap speeds on a race-track.
There’s no car to see yet, only a swooping graphic design that will be the representation of the car until a future unveiling.
Less than 100 will be built, and as sure as Night follows Day those will be sold out very quickly as is the case with all the greatest motoring creations of the modern era.
The car will be Aston Martin’s first mid-engined vehicle which in it of itself is a big change and offers something very exciting. One man most excited is the renowned designer Adrian Newey.
After an F1 career spanning 30 years, having designed ten World Championship winning F1 cars this hypercar is like a childhood dream come true to get to design a road car.
“From the age of six I have had two goals in life – to be involved in the design of racing cars, and to be involved in the design of a super car.” Newey commented. “Whilst the former ambition went on to form my career to date, the latter has always bubbled away, resulting in countless sketches and doodles over the years.
“The opportunity to now develop and realise those ideas whilst working with Marek and his colleagues from Aston Martin is tremendously exciting. It allows us to translate the technology we have developed in F1TM into a new arena.”
If you do have the cash, good luck – but you won’t see the car until some time (likely late) in 2018.
