Tablets have already helped turn comic books digital, but now technology is going to bring them into the augmented reality realm. Marvel Comics has shown off its upcoming platform for bringing its comic book heroes to virtual life using your mobile phone.

The new augmented reality platform will not only show viewers an animated Iron Man dancing around their iPhone or Android device’s screen when they point their phone’s camera at a compatible comic (which it will) – TechCrunch has quoted Marvel as saying that the goal was to “build out DVD and Blu-Ray extras into the comic book itself.”

The augmented reality features will work not just on printed edition of the comics, but also the digital versions. It will make its debut in a series of Avengers Vs X-Men later this year.

As you can see from the video below, the result is awesome to look at, but exactly how well it’s implemented will really determine how many people start pointing their smartphones at their comic books.
