Love him or hate him, Shane Warne can pull a crowd… And we’re not just talking about high-profile British women, either. So news that Warnie is set to play for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash 20/20 cricket league is great news for the competition.

Exactly how much cricket the leg-spinner will play for the team, but according to Fairfax it’s hoped he will help draw in crowds of over 50,000 for key matches, including the opener on December 17 against the Melbourne Renegades. The deal has apparently been sweetened by a $50,000 bonus for the text-loving cricketer in return for helping to promote the new competition.

At 42, you wouldn’t expect Warnie to have too many matches left in him, but getting him on board is going to be a huge boon for the BBL as it tries to capture a new generation of cricket fans.
