If you take your ping pong seriously – and you should – then you won’t even blink at the thought of dropping $US45K on a rubber table tennis table.
Made by American artist Tom Burr for luxury retailer Neiman Marcus, the limited edition table is as much a piece of art as a functional ping pong table. Made from black rubber – a decision that’s not only aesthetically pleasing but also gives the balls a bit more bounce – the table will be limited to a run of 10 units, and almost definitely isn’t available outside the US. On the upside, $US2.5K of every table sold will be donated to charity, so it’s not all bad news.
As Burr himself describes it:
“I like the notion of rubber. It has low-key glamour, like that of a sports car’s bumpers and guards. And, quite simply, rubber makes the balls bounce—more bounce for your buck.”
