The problem with power failures – be they a local fuse or a street or suburb wide blackout – is that a lot of the modern technology we use becomes completely useless.

One of the most vital of those technologies is the phone. If you’ve got a cordless phone at your home you are completely stuffed!  You will need to have a direct ‘old style’ phone plugged directly in to get service.

Until now.

Today Panasonic announced the 662 Series DECT Cordless phones.  These phones operate as normal digital cordless handsets.  However, unlike any other cordless they will provide some service in a power outage.

This system works by allowing you to place the phones in the base and use the ‘speaker’ function to make or receive calls.  I havent tested the device yet, but assume that the device may in fact get some of the power required from the battery in the cordless handset.  Otherwise, it’s using simple base phone system with speaker amplification to allow this to work in an outage.

With a 50 name and number phonebook plus caller ID with a 50 name and number call log, this Series is ideal for Australian families that want the convenience of quickly calling loved ones at their fingertips. The 161 Series also features an easy-to-read LCD screen that displays the caller’s name and number for easy identification as well as 15 hours talk time.

This industry-first feature makes it possible to use this cordless phone even during a power blackout by using battery power, with up to 3 hours talk time for the KX-TG6622ALBi. When using a single handset, the user simply places the handset on the base and will then be able to make calls from the handset using the speakerphone functionii.
