DELL STREAK Available on OPTUS EXCLUSIVELY for THREE MONTHS from OCTOBER 1.
Optus and DELL have announced that Australian’s can buy the STREAK – their mini tablet, from October 1 through Optus. Outright at $649, or $0 upfront on a $59 Plan.
This device, with it’s 5 inch screen is an overblown smartphone. It’s huge – as a phone. Dell’s Matt Telfer told me he felt comfortable with it up to his ear, but what else would he say!
The capacitive touch screen make usability top notch, and Android is a fantastic and customisable Operating System – its key advantage is the widget capability on the home screens, make it a truly interactive experience.
At first touch, its light, well made, and impressive.
Delve into it for a while, I think this device will take some time to get used to. Bringing it out of sleep mode requires the power button which is not in an obvious spot, the keyboard on this (and most android devices) I find is a bit hard to get used to – but all that said, I look forward to putting it through it’s paces much more as a social media and email tool.
At $649 I think it might be a tad pricey – However, consider any smartphone would cost you that outright, so it is hard to make comparisons. The problem for Dell (and Samsung with the Galaxy Tab) is we are comparing Mobile Phone devices (Streak/Tab) to an outright Tablet (iPad) who’d have thought Apple would come off looking cheapest!
Obvious advantages over the iPad are the MicroSD slot, Camera front and back, and mobile phone capability.
I’ll post a full review later – however, the good news is, FINALLY Aussies get the device – so if you’ve been waiting for it. It’s here.
Optus have four clear plans for the Streak:
$49 Cap – with 1GB Data, Unlimited Social media, $450 worth of calls and text but with a $7 handset payment each month.
at $59 per month, you’ll get 2GB data, Unlimited Social Media, $500 worth of calls, and Unlimited Standard National SMS and MMS – $0 handset cost.
at $79 Cap per month, 2GB data, Unlimited Social Media, $800 worth of calls, Unlimited Standard SMS and MMS and no handset cost.
and finally, for $99 per month you’ll get 3GB data, Unlimited social Media, Unlimited local and national calls to Australian landlines, an voice + video calls to any Australian GSM phone. Again, no handset costs.
The Free SMS offer reminds me of the old Telstra Hipster, it was a real hit with the kids, I wonder if that is going to drive this device.
Clearly, this is being positioned as a social networking tool, and at the face of it, you can see great value in those plans from Optus if that’s your requirement.
